Imagine you are comparing two cruises.
One is seven nights in a balcony cabin. The other is ten nights in an inside cabin.
The ships and itineraries are equally appealing, and the total prices are similar.
Would you rather have your own balcony or three extra days on the ship?
Yes, that Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He has a newsletter on beehiiv. So do Codie Sanchez, Jay Shetty, David Begnaud, Colin & Samir, and Joanna Stern.
They could publish just about anywhere. They chose beehiiv to build a direct connection with the people who want to hear from them most. And you can do the same, whether you’re world-famous or just at the start of your plan for world domination.
The Case for the Balcony
I have always chosen a balcony cabin. There is something about having your own little outdoor space at sea.
You can step outside in the morning without getting dressed properly, searching for a chair or speaking to another human being.
That alone has value.
You can watch the ship arrive in port, enjoy a quiet drink and see the ocean whenever you want.
Then there is that moment when you open the curtains and discover an entirely new destination outside.
You went to bed looking at open water. Now there is an island.
That never gets old.
But How Much Would You Use It?
I love the idea of spending long, peaceful hours on the balcony with a book.
But cruise days have a way of filling themselves.
Between meals, activities, ports and shows, that relaxing afternoon could become eleven minutes between changing for dinner and looking for a missing shoe.
Some cruisers practically live on their balconies. Others step outside, announce that it is windy and go back in.
It is worth being honest about which type you are.
The actual you. Not the imaginary version who watches every sunrise while the real you is still asleep.

Three More Days at Sea
An inside cabin means giving up the private view and natural light.
But three extra days means more meals you do not have to cook, more entertainment and more time before anyone expects you to make your own bed.
That is a strong argument.
A longer cruise would give me more time to settle in without feeling that I need to do everything immediately.
I could skip an activity and relax.
Or count walking to the buffet as my activity.
I have not tried an inside cabin, but I can see the appeal of somewhere dark for sleeping in.
Although I might need an alarm to avoid discovering that breakfast ended two hours ago.
Would the Itinerary Change Things?
The destination could sway me.
For Alaska or Norway, I would be especially tempted by a balcony. If the scenery were a major reason for booking, I would want to enjoy those views from my own space.
On a warm-weather cruise with plenty of port days, I might be happier choosing extra time and using the ship’s outdoor decks.
Of course, that sounds sensible until I am searching for an empty chair.
Then my imaginary balcony starts looking very attractive.
Apparently, I can argue for either option. This is why booking a cruise takes me so long.
My Choice
Although I have always booked a balcony, I am definitely open to trying an inside cabin in exchange for a longer cruise.
Seven nights with a balcony or ten nights inside? I think the extra three days would win.
I would miss having my own outdoor space, but I would have more time to enjoy the rest of the ship.
I would probably spend the first few days wondering whether I had made the right decision.
Then day eight would arrive.
The balcony version of me would already be home doing laundry.
Suddenly, that inside cabin would feel considerably more luxurious.
Which would you choose: seven nights with a balcony or ten nights in an inside cabin?
Is your private view worth giving up a few extra days at sea?
