Cruise ships are funny.
Thousands of people board excited to explore every deck, every restaurant, every show, and every activity.
Then something interesting happens.
Most of us end up visiting the same handful of places over and over again.
The buffet.
The pool deck.
The theater.
Our favourite bar.
Maybe the pizza place at 11 p.m.
Meanwhile, some of the best spots on the entire ship sit quietly in the background, waiting to be discovered.

The Library
Let's start with one of the easiest places to overlook.
The library.
Many passengers don't even realize their ship has one.
To be fair, cruise ship libraries aren't exactly advertised with giant flashing signs.
They're usually tucked away in a quiet corner of the ship.
But if you find one, you might discover one of the most peaceful places onboard.
Comfortable chairs.
Ocean views.
A shelf full of books left behind by other travelers.
And perhaps most importantly...
No announcements about belly flop contests.
Observation Lounges
If you've ever wandered to the very front of a cruise ship, you've probably stumbled across an observation lounge.
These spaces often have floor-to-ceiling windows and incredible views.
The strange thing is that they're frequently busiest on embarkation day.
After that?
Many passengers forget they exist.
Meanwhile, a handful of cruisers are quietly enjoying coffee, reading, watching the ocean, or simply staring out the window while everyone else is fighting for a chair by the pool.
Not a bad trade-off.
Card Rooms
Card rooms might sound boring.
I used to think so too.
But they can be surprisingly useful.
Even if you don't play cards.
These spaces often become quiet retreats where people work on puzzles, read, play board games, or simply escape the crowds for a while.
And unlike some public areas on the ship, nobody is trying to sell you a drink package while you're there.
Quiet Outdoor Decks
Most passengers naturally gravitate toward the main pool deck.
That's where the action is.
Music.
Games.
Movies.
Crowds.
But many ships also have quieter outdoor spaces tucked away on upper decks, lower decks, or toward the front of the ship.
Sometimes you'll find a row of empty loungers with a beautiful ocean view while hundreds of passengers compete for space elsewhere.
It's one of those cruise mysteries that never quite makes sense.
The Walking Track at Sunrise
This one might be my personal favourite.
Most people discover the walking track.
Very few experience it at sunrise.
There's something completely different about a cruise ship early in the morning.
The air feels cooler.
The ship feels quieter.
The ocean seems endless.
And for a brief period of time, it can feel like you have the entire ship to yourself.
Even if you're not a morning person, it's worth doing at least once.
Cruise ships are full of small seating areas that somehow escape everyone's attention.
A pair of chairs near a window.
A tucked-away lounge near a staircase.
A quiet corner behind a café.
Some of these spots become my favorite places on the ship because they're perfect for people-watching, reading, or simply taking a break.
And unlike the popular venues, they're usually available.
Imagine that.
Specialty Cafés
Many passengers discover specialty cafés sometime around Day 6.
Usually by accident.
That's unfortunate because these can be some of the most relaxing places onboard.
Whether it's a coffee bar, pastry shop, gelato counter, or small café tucked away on a promenade deck, these venues often offer a slower pace than the busier parts of the ship.
They're perfect for a morning coffee, an afternoon break, or simply escaping the crowds for a while.
Why We Miss These Places
The funny thing is that none of these locations are secret.
Cruise lines don't hide them.
They're listed on deck plans.
They're marked on maps.
We simply get comfortable.
We find a few places we like and stick with them.
And honestly, there's nothing wrong with that.
But every now and then, it pays to wander down a hallway you've never explored before.
Take a staircase instead of the elevator.
Walk one deck higher.
Turn left instead of right.
You never know what you'll discover.
The Best Spot on the Ship
Ask ten cruisers about their favourite place onboard and you'll probably get ten different answers.
That's part of what makes cruising interesting.
For some people, it's the pool deck.
For others, it's the casino, the theater, or a balcony cabin.
But sometimes the best place on the ship isn't the busiest place.
It's the quiet corner you accidentally discover halfway through the cruise and spend the rest of the week wondering how you missed it.
Because sometimes the best spots on the ship aren't hidden.
They're just overlooked.
See you next week!
