If you’ve cruised in the last 10 or 15 years, you’ve probably noticed something. Cruise ships aren’t just getting bigger. They’re getting smarter.

Digital Muster Drills

If you’ve cruised before, you probably remember the old muster drills.
Everyone had to gather at their assigned station, stand shoulder-to-shoulder in life jackets, and listen to a long safety demonstration.

Today, many cruise lines use digital muster drills instead.
Passengers watch a short safety video on their phone or cabin TV, then check in at their muster station briefly to confirm they understand the instructions.
It still meets safety requirements, but it’s far more convenient for everyone onboard.

Smart Cabins

Cabins themselves are becoming more tech-friendly too.

Some newer ships allow you to control things like:
• lighting
• temperature
• curtains
…using a touch panel or even the cruise line’s mobile app.

A few ships also use sensors that detect when guests enter the room and automatically adjust the lighting or air conditioning.

It’s the kind of thing you might expect in a modern smart home, but now it’s appearing on cruise ships.

The One Thing That Hasn’t Changed

Even with all this technology, there’s still one thing that hasn’t changed on a cruise.
Your phone is still one of the most important things you carry around the ship.
You use it for photos, reservations, schedules, messaging, and sometimes even your cabin key.
