✈️ Should You Check a Bag or Stick to Carry-On Luggage Only?

There are a few things to consider!

Packing for a cruise is already an adventure—but deciding whether to check your luggage or go carry-on only? That’s a dilemma worthy of its own deck party.

Let’s break it down so you can confidently roll up to embarkation day without stress (or missing socks).

🎒 Carry-On Only: The Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • You’re in control – No waiting at baggage claim, no risk of lost luggage.

  • Faster boarding & disembarking – You’ve got your stuff, and you’re free to go.

  • Forces you to pack smart – Less temptation to overpack things you’ll never wear.

🚫 Cons:

  • Size limits vary – Cruise lines and airlines don’t always agree on what counts as “carry-on.”

  • Liquids are a pain – TSA rules still apply for flights, which means tiny toiletries.

  • Bulky items are tricky – Packing shoes, snorkel gear, or formalwear can be tight.

🧳 Checked Luggage: The Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • More space – Great if you’re bringing formalwear, bulky items, or souvenirs home.

  • Easier airport security – No fuss with liquids or laptops.

  • Less strain – You won’t be hauling your life around the terminal.

🚫 Cons:

  • Risk of delays or lost bags – Airlines aren’t perfect.

  • Extra fees – Especially for budget airlines.

  • You may wait to get your bag onboard – Sometimes you get to your cabin before your suitcase does.

🧠 So… What’s the Best Option?

If you’re on a short cruise (3–5 days) or traveling light, carry-on is usually the winner—fewer headaches, less waiting, and you won’t miss your luggage if there’s a hiccup at the airport.

For longer cruises, or if you need specific gear (like CPAP machines, formal outfits, or more shoes than you care to admit), a checked bag may be worth it—just make sure to pack a “Day 1 Essentials” bag with meds, swimwear, documents, and anything you’ll need before your luggage arrives.

👡 My Personal Rule of Thumb?

Fly with a carry-on, cruise with a checked bag.
If I’m flying in the day before, I’ll check a bag to make cruise life easier. But if I’m flying in the morning of, I never risk it—carry-on all the way.

No matter what you choose, the key is packing with intention—so you're not stuck wishing you'd brought something (or wondering why you brought five pairs of sandals!)

Hope this helps you cruise a little smarter!

Bon voyage,
Tara
