It's Not as Lonely as You Think #0018
The surprising perks of sailing solo
The idea of going on a cruise alone used to sound… well, a little intimidating. Would people think it’s weird? Would I end up sitting alone at dinner every night?
But here’s the truth: cruising solo is one of the most freeing, surprisingly social ways to travel. Whether you’re an introvert who craves “me time” or an extrovert ready to make friends from around the world, a cruise ship is set up perfectly for solo travelers.
Solo Cabins Are a Thing Now
In the past, solo cruisers had to pay something called the single supplement, basically double the fare because cabins were priced for two. Not exactly solo-friendly. But newer ships, like Norwegian’s Epic or Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, now feature designated solo cabins. They’re cozy, stylish, and often come with access to a “studio lounge” where other solo travelers can meet up. Virgin Voyages also has solo insider and sea view cabins designed just for one.
You’ll Never Actually Be Alone (Unless You Want To)
Cruise lines are smart, they know plenty of guests are traveling solo and want connection. That’s why you’ll often find solo meet-ups listed in the daily schedule. Show up, and you’re likely to meet fellow solo cruisers who are also looking to chat, grab a drink, or team up for trivia.
Dining is another easy place to make connections. You can request to join a shared table in the main dining room, or choose the buffet and strike up conversations with other guests. On Virgin Voyages, dining is already casual and social, you’ll often find yourself sitting with new friends over mezze plates or tapas-style dishes.
Built-In Entertainment = Instant Icebreaker
The great thing about being on a ship? You don’t have to “plan” entertainment, it’s everywhere. From comedy shows and karaoke to dance classes and deck parties, activities naturally bring people together. I’ve seen strangers become best friends after laughing through a game show in the atrium.
And if you’re not in the mood? That’s the beauty of cruising solo. No compromising. No waiting on anyone. You can go to bed at 9:00 p.m. or stay out dancing until sunrise, it’s completely up to you.
A Word on Safety
Understandably, safety can be a concern for solo travelers. But cruise ships are actually one of the safest travel environments out there. With 24/7 security, keycard-only cabin hallways, and crew who quickly get to know you, you’ll feel comfortable exploring on your own.
My Takeaway
If you’ve been thinking about a cruise but can’t find a travel buddy, don’t let that stop you. Book the cabin. Pack the bag. Step onboard. You may find that solo cruising gives you the best of both worlds, independence and connection.
Because sometimes, the best company you can have on a cruise…is yourself.
Until next week,
