Is Two Plates Too Many? Asking for a Friend. #0031
Warning: this email may cause sudden bacon cravings.

There are many little debates at sea, formal night outfits, chair-saving etiquette, “walk off early” vs “enjoy one more slow breakfast.”
But one debate quietly shapes every morning onboard:
What’s the best way to do breakfast on a cruise?
On land, breakfast is quick, routine, almost automatic. On a ship, it becomes something special, a small ritual that sets the tone for the day.
And everyone has a way they like to start their mornings at sea.
Some travelers love the energy and variety of the buffet. Some prefer a slow, sit-down dining room breakfast. Some swear nothing beats room service coffee on a balcony with sea breeze and quiet.
There’s no wrong answer only strong preferences and happy plates.

The Buffet Crowd
For buffet lovers, breakfast is freedom and possibility: a little of this, a taste of that, maybe a new favourite discovered by accident.
It’s casual, familiar, and fun and walking around to choose feels like part of the experience.
The Sit-Down Dining Fans
Then there are cruisers who enjoy a peaceful, seated breakfast.
Fresh coffee poured for you, warm plates arriving at the table, a chance to ease into the day. It feels calm. Intentional. A quiet start before the sunshine and activities begin.
The Balcony Breakfast People
And of course, the balcony-breakfast crowd the ones who truly embrace slow mornings.
Room service, a soft breeze, ocean views, and no rush whatsoever. There’s something really grounding about starting the day with the sound of waves instead of clinking plates.
A Breakfast Snapshot From Our Cruise
On our Virgin Voyages sailing aboard the Valiant Lady, we had breakfast in The Galley, Virgin’s food-hall-style restaurant where you sit and order, and the crew brings everything to you.
No buffet lines just a relaxed morning with lots of options. From eggs to pastries to fruit bowls and specialty coffees.
Here’s what our plates looked like that day:

Poached eggs, bacon, sausage, and breakfast sweet potatoes from The Galley.

Omelet, crispy bacon, and hash brown patties. A classic hot breakfast at sea.
And a look at the atmosphere:

The Galley on the Valiant Lady relaxed, modern, and full of options without the buffet rush.
It was such a nice way to start the morning slow, friendly service and plenty of choice without the usual breakfast hustle you sometimes find at sea.
Every cruise line does breakfast differently, and discovering “your breakfast style” is part of the adventure.
Whether it’s slow and peaceful or lively and full of energy, there’s something lovely about starting the day with good food, ocean light, and nothing on the schedule except enjoying where you are.
