Let's be honest.
The cruise buffet can be a little overwhelming. Sometimes I don't even know where to start!
Rows of fresh fruit.
Hot breakfast.
Pizza.
Salads.
Desserts.
After a few cruises, many passengers discover that enjoying the buffet isn't about eating more.
It's about eating smarter.
Here are a few simple habits experienced cruisers tend to follow.
1. Take a lap first.
It sounds simple, but it's probably the best buffet tip you'll ever hear.
Before picking up a plate, walk the entire buffet.
You might discover an omelette station tucked in the corner, fresh carving stations, or desserts you would have completely missed if you'd filled your plate too soon.
2. Avoid the rush.
Right after the breakfast rush or immediately following shore excursions can be the busiest times.
If your schedule allows, eating just 20–30 minutes earlier or later can mean shorter lines, quieter seating, and a much more relaxing meal.
3. Try something you've never had.
One of the best parts of cruising is discovering new foods.
Maybe it's an unfamiliar dessert.
A regional specialty.
Or a dish you've always been curious about but never ordered at home.
If you don't love it...
That's okay.
You're only one buffet station away from something else.

4. Save room for dessert.
We've all made the mistake.
A giant plate of lunch...
...followed by walking past the dessert station and immediately regretting every bite.
A little self-control early on usually pays off later.
5. Remember, you can always go back.
There seems to be an unwritten rule among first-time cruisers:
"I need to fit everything on one plate."
You really don't.
The buffet isn't going anywhere.
Taking smaller portions means you get to try more foods without wasting anything, and if you discover a new favourite, you can always go back for seconds.
One item I never cruise without
One thing that has earned a permanent place on my packing list is an insulated travel tumbler.
Whether I'm filling it with coffee before watching the ship pull into port or ice water while relaxing by the pool, it keeps drinks hot or cold much longer than the standard cups you'll find onboard.
It's one of those inexpensive cruise items you don't realize you'll appreciate until you have it.
The buffet is one of the great joys of cruising.
Take your time.
Try something new.
And remember...
If you can barely carry your plate...
You probably skipped the "take a lap first" part. 😉
Have a great week!
