You might not think about this until you’re already on board…
But if you don’t eat meat, cruising can feel like a bit of a question mark.
Are there actually good options?
Or are you just eating pasta and salad all week?
The answer is somewhere in the middle.
The good news
Most cruise lines have gotten way better with vegetarian options.
You’ll usually find:
Veggie-friendly dishes in the buffet
Clearly marked menu items in the main dining room
Plant-based swaps if you ask
And on some ships, there are even full vegetarian or vegan menus.
So no, you’re not stuck eating just side dishes anymore.
Are You Ready to Actually Retire?
Knowing when to retire is harder than knowing how much to save. The timing depends on what your retirement actually looks like: how long your money needs to last, what you'll spend, and where your income comes from.

Where it works really well
Buffets are actually your best friend.
There’s variety, you can mix and match, and you’re not relying on one menu item.
Things like:
Stir fry stations
Pasta bars
Salads, grains, roasted veggies
It’s easy to build a full meal without feeling like you’re missing out.

Where it can fall short
The main dining room can be a bit hit or miss.
Sometimes there are great options.
Other times… it’s clearly an afterthought.
You might see:
One vegetarian entrée
Limited variety night to night
Meals that don’t feel as filling
And if you have stricter dietary needs (like vegan or dairy-free), it can take a bit more planning.
What makes a big difference
A few small things can completely change your experience:
Let the cruise line know ahead of time
They can often prepare better options if they know in advance.
Talk to your server early in the trip
They can sometimes arrange meals for the next night.
Don’t rely on just one place to eat
Mix buffets, dining rooms, and casual spots.
One thing that’s changed
Cruise lines are starting to take this more seriously.
There’s more demand now, and it shows.
Some ships are adding:
Plant-based menus
Clearly labeled items
More globally inspired dishes (which tend to be naturally vegetarian)
It’s not perfect yet, but it’s definitely improving.
So… can you eat well on a cruise without meat?
Yes.
But you might need to be a little flexible.
If you go in expecting unlimited gourmet vegetarian meals every night….you might be disappointed.
But if you’re open to mixing things up, you’ll be just fine.
A small tip: if you’re picky about snacks or protein options, bringing a few of your own can make a big difference. I love these little snackle boxes for travel-friendly snack packs or protein bars can save you when options feel limited.
